Background of the Study

Clinical placements are a critical component of nursing education, offering students the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world healthcare settings. These placements are designed to help students develop essential clinical skills, enhance their decision-making abilities, and increase their confidence in delivering patient care. Public hospitals in Nigeria, including those in Gombe State, serve as primary settings for these clinical placements, where students gain firsthand experience in the realities of healthcare delivery.

In Gombe State, clinical placements play a central role in the training of nursing students. However, nursing students often face significant challenges during their clinical placements, such as inadequate supervision, lack of access to resources, overwhelming patient loads, and exposure to complex cases that may exceed their level of competence (Adebayo et al., 2023). These challenges can negatively impact students’ learning experiences and hinder their development of practical skills necessary for effective patient care. Furthermore, students' emotional well-being and career motivation may be affected by the difficulties they encounter in these settings.

While research on clinical placements in Nigeria is abundant, studies focusing specifically on the experiences of nursing students in Gombe State are limited. Understanding these experiences is essential to improve clinical training programs and ensure that nursing students receive a well-rounded education that prepares them for the challenges of real-world nursing practice.

Statement of the Problem

Nursing students in Gombe State face numerous challenges during their clinical placements in public hospitals, which may impede their learning and affect the quality of their education. These challenges could also influence their overall experience of nursing education and affect their professional development. This study seeks to examine the experiences of nursing students with clinical placements in public hospitals in Gombe State, identifying factors that contribute to positive and negative learning outcomes.

Objectives of the Study

1. To examine the experiences of nursing students during their clinical placements in public hospitals in Gombe State.

2. To identify the challenges faced by nursing students during their clinical placements in Gombe State.

3. To propose recommendations for improving the clinical placement experiences of nursing students in public hospitals in Gombe State.

Research Questions

1. What are the experiences of nursing students during their clinical placements in public hospitals in Gombe State?

2. What challenges do nursing students face during their clinical placements in public hospitals in Gombe State?

3. What strategies can be implemented to improve the clinical placement experiences of nursing students in Gombe State?

Research Hypotheses

1. Nursing students in Gombe State encounter significant challenges during their clinical placements that affect their learning outcomes and professional development.

2. Clinical placements with adequate supervision and resources lead to more positive learning experiences for nursing students in Gombe State.

3. Strategies such as improved mentorship, better resource allocation, and enhanced supervision will improve nursing students’ experiences in clinical placements in Gombe State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on nursing students in Gombe State and will explore their experiences during clinical placements in public hospitals. Limitations may include challenges in generalizing findings to all nursing students in Nigeria and the potential for variation in the quality of placements across different hospitals.
